Configuration of XP Mode (User-specific)

          Running the Virtual PC setup wizard

Click on the Start button, All Programs, Windows Virtual PC, Windows Virtual PC.  Click “Create a new machine” at the top.

Name it “Windows XP Mode

Choose the defaults on the next screen

Choose the second option (“Use an existing virtual hard disk”) on the next screen and browse to:

C:\Program Files\Windows Virtual PC\windows XP mode.vhd

Start the virtual machine

Once it reaches the logon screen, log on with the local admin account.

Once the virtual machine has started click on the Ctrl-Alt-Del option on the top of the window, select shutdown and then select shutdown from the drop down list.

Click on the Start button, Windows Virtual PC and Windows Virtual PC.

Right click on the “Windows XP Mode” machine and the click on the settings option.

Select Com1 in the setting column and then, in the right hand pane, put a tick in physical serial port.

Select COM1 and click ok

Now select integration features in the setting column

In the right hand pane copy the setting from the graphic above. Note; put a tick in all drives.

 

Most of the settings will already be correct, but check the RAM, Network Adaptors and Integration Features

Check that VM has 512MB of Memory.  Amend if necessary

·         For laptops, the number of network adaptors should be 2 and set Adapter 1 to the Network Connections (names vary by type) and Adapter 2 to the Wireless card (again names vary).

·         Desktops normally only have one adaptor, so change it to the Network Connection (not Shared NAT).

In Integrated Features, check that the drives is ticked and audio is unticked

Now Click on the OK Button and then double click on the machine to start it.

          Change the screensaver time

Log into Windows XP Mode as the user and make the following changes:

Now click on the Screensaver tab

Switch the screensaver to “None”

Click OK to return to the desktop
