DirSync is Deploy Office 365 Directory Synchronization (DirSync) in Microsoft Azure

The Azure Active Directory Sync tool (also known as the Directory Synchronization tool, Directory Sync tool, the DirSync tool, or the DirSync server) is a server-based application that you install on a domain-joined server to synchronize your on-premises Active Directory users to Office 365 for professionals and small businesses. You can install the Azure Active Directory Sync tool on a server in Azure or on-premises, but we recommend installing it in Azure for the following reasons:

  • You can provision and configure cloud-based servers faster, making the services available to your users sooner.

  • Azure offers better site availability with less effort.

  • You can reduce the number of on-premises servers in your organization.

Azure Active Directory Synchronization Services (AAD Sync)

AAD Sync capabilities in this release include the following;

  • Active Directory and Exchange multi-forest environments can be extended now to the cloud.
  • Control over which attributes are synchronized based on desired cloud services.
  • Selection of accounts to be synchronized through domains, OUs, etc.
  • Ability to set up the connection to AD with minimal Windows Server AD privileges.
  • Setup synchronization rules by mapping attributes and controlling how the values flow to the cloud.
  • Preview AAD Premium password change and reset to AD on-premises.

AAD Connect / Azure AD Connect

The Azure AD Connect wizard is the single tool and guided experience for connecting your on premises identity infrastructure to the cloud.  Choose your topology and needs (single or multiple directories, password sync or federation), and the wizard will deploy and configure all components required to get your connection up and running including sync services, AD FS, and the Azure AD PowerShell module.

Azure AD Connect encompasses functionality that was previously released as Dirsync and AAD Sync.  These tools will no longer be released individually.  All future improvements will be included in updates to Azure AD Connect, so that you always know where to get the most current functionality.
